Matthew Gervais
Dr. Matthew Gervais is a Lecturer in Psychology at the Centre for Culture and Evolution at Brunel University London. Trained as an evolutionary and psychological anthropologist, his research takes a multi-level approach to human sociality, seeking to understand the mutual constitution and co-evolution of human emotions, social relationships and societies; a key to this endeavour is his research on the psychological basis of social norm adherence. His work uses a range of methods, both descriptive and experimental, including long-term field research, social psychological surveys and collaborative multi-site studies. He has expertise in the South Pacific, where he has worked for the past decade with Indigenous iTaukei communities in the Fiji Islands.
